Future Homes Hub appoints Bargate Homes MD as chair of new SME group

Mark White, Managing Director of Hampshire-based Bargate Homes, has been appointed as the chair of the Future Homes Hub‘s newly established SME liaison group.

The group aims to address the challenges that small and medium-sized housebuilders face while striving for the UK’s net zero targets.

The Future Homes Hub, launched in 2021, focuses on the collaboration needed within the housing sector to meet the government’s environmental objectives.

The SME liaison group will focus on reviewing specific hurdles, proposing solutions, and supporting the government in understanding the needs of smaller housebuilders.

Bargate Homes, a subsidiary of VIVID, builds 300 high EPC-rated homes annually and has been active in the housing market since 2006.

Mark, a founding member, became Managing Director three years ago and has a wealth of experience, including involvement in the All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPG) for Housing Market and SME housebuilders.

Ed Lockhart, CEO of the Future Homes Hub, praised the selection of Mark: “SMEs are crucial to housing innovation but often face unique challenges in meeting new regulations. This liaison group will help housebuilders navigate these challenges, and Mark White is an excellent choice to lead it.”

Mark echoed the sentiment, highlighting the critical role SMEs play: “Many SMEs are already driving change and tackling the environmental challenges the industry faces.

“However, while net zero targets are essential, developments must remain commercially viable.” He noted the rising costs of building homes, mentioning that it now costs £20,000 more to build a typical three-bedroom house than it did five years ago.

Bargate Homes is currently working on six developments that will deliver over 300 homes this financial year, employing 500 skilled tradespeople.

Mark is enthusiastic about the future and his new role in the Hub, saying: “I’m looking forward to helping SMEs deliver beautiful, energy-efficient homes that meet both sustainability goals and market demands.”

The Future Homes Hub has a comprehensive plan in place to support the transition to net zero, with four key goals centred around sustainability, low carbon development, and innovation in construction methods. The Hub also encourages collaboration across the industry, with over 50 of the UK’s largest homebuilders involved.
