DP World has bolstered its UK rail network by launching a second weekly service connecting two of the country’s largest container ports: London Gateway and Southampton.
The new service, set to start on 1 October, will be operated by Freightliner and is part of DP World’s strategy to improve supply chain resilience and reduce carbon emissions.
The mid-week service will complement the existing weekend connection between the two logistics hubs. This expanded rail network aims to cut over one million truck miles each year, reducing congestion and CO2 emissions.
John Trenchard, Vice President of Commercial & Supply Chain at DP World in the UK, said: “Launching a second rail service between London Gateway and Southampton is the next logical step for DP World, given the clear benefits for our customers.
“Providing a cleaner and more cost-efficient way to move cargo across the country is a key priority for DP World in the UK, and modal shift has consistently proven to be a reliable and flexible solution.”
DP World’s Modal Shift Programme, which incentivises customers to use rail rather than road, will also benefit from this new service. The initiative has already increased rail freight’s share at Southampton from 21 per cent to more than 30 per cent.
Chris Lawrenson, Managing Director of Intermodal Logistics at Freightliner, said: “Freightliner are delighted to continue supporting DP World with their second weekly port train service, working in partnership to develop further modal shift between Southampton and London Gateway.
“Our fleet of rolling stock and carbon-efficient trains provide customers with lower-carbon options for their international container movements.”
In addition to its rail links, DP World provides a range of logistics, forwarding, and European transport services, integrated into its global network.
The company’s UK presence includes the London Gateway Logistics Park, which boasts 9.25 million sq. ft. of storage and handling space – the largest port-adjacent logistics park in the country.
DP World’s investment in rail infrastructure comes at a time when businesses are under increasing pressure to manage costs, improve reliability, and speed up deliveries. The new service is part of a broader effort to help customers navigate a fast-changing and unpredictable trading environment while serving the national interest.
