Coupon superhero Jordon's new subscription service is fighting back against the cost of living crisis

Hythe resident Jordon Cox, ‘The Coupon Kid’, is getting ready to launch Deal A Day on Monday.

The subscription service will see him sending out daily deals emails to help people save money on their shopping.

It will be the next step on a journey which started during a difficult time for Jordon at the age of 15.

“My parents split up, so we dropped to a single income overnight and we were struggling,” he explained.

“It was around this time I first watched the US TV show Extreme Couponing. I just thought ‘that’s amazing, we could do that’. I started googling coupons, printing them off and taking them to my local Tesco.

“The first week I saved around £10, next week it was £20 then the following week it was £30 – it just kind of kept growing and snowballing from there. That Christmas I got my Christmas dinner, including the turkey and all the trimmings, for 10p.

“It led up to possibly the best moment in my entire life in terms of couponing, where I got £600 worth of shopping in Tesco for 4p. The person on the checkout wasn’t as happy as I was!”

This feat of saving caught the attention of the national media, and led to a number of TV appearances which helped Jordon grow into an expert in the coupon and supermarket money saving space.

In 2016, Jordon caught media attention again, when he realised it would be cheaper to fly from Sheffield to Essex via Berlin than to take a train.

“I was working in Sheffield and needed to get back to Essex where I grew up, but a one-way train was £48.

“Buses were all sold out so I randomly looked at flights. I found one from East Midlands Airport to Berlin for £11, then one from Berlin to Stanstead for £9.

“I ended up getting a bus from Sheffield to Derby, flew to Berlin where I spent eight hours, saw the Brandenburg Gate and had a currywurst, got a train back to the airport, flew back to Stanstead and got a bus back home.

“All of that saved me £8 on my train fare. I got home, saved money, and got to experience a new country.”

He spent the next four years working for Martin Lewis and the Money Saving Expert Group, before deciding to set up his own business in January of 2020.

Jordon’s face will be familiar to any regular viewer of Channel 4 TV show Steph’s Packed Lunch, where he hosts Coupon Corner. He also has a weekly segment on BBC Radio Solent.

The newest string to Jordon’s bow is his website, Deal A Day, where people can subscribe to receive live updates of the latest deals.

We asked Jordon for five tips on how to save money at the moment.

1. Download the cashback apps. There are three main ones – Shopmium, CheckoutSmart and GreenJinn. There’s loads of offers which rotate every week. If you see something you like, you buy it and bring it home, take a picture of the receipt to prove your bought it, and they’ll give you cashback. Sometimes there’s freebies, too.
2. Look around in the supermarket for different aisles with the same product. One of these is the world food aisle, especially for things like tinned goods, spices and condiments. Not only is it cheaper, it’s often better too.
3. There’s an app for your phone called Trolley. It’s a supermarket comparison app. You type in what you want to buy and it will tell you the prices in all the major supermarkets so you know the cheapest one to go to. You can even add a whole basket
4. Look out for yellow stickers! If you go into a shop around an hour or two before they close you can often get things for between 75 to 90 per cent cheaper.
5. Sign up to DealADay.co.uk. I’ll send you coupons, deals, freebies and bargains every day. As soon as they pop up, I’ll send you an email to make sure you never miss one. On average, the deals are worth around £8 a day, so you could in theory be saving thousands every year.

In conclusion, Jordon said: “There are constantly deals out there you might not know about, and there’s websites and resources which can help you save money.

“Especially in a cost of living crisis where the prices of everything have gone up, there are ways you can cut back.

“Although it does seem quite bleak when you’re looking at your bills and they’re constantly rising, there are ways you can save hundreds, if not thousands per year, to offset that cost and make things more manageable.”
