Gunwharf Quays moves forward with £45m investment in Central Square revamp

Gunwharf Quays is set to transform its Central Square, as owner Landsec submitted a planning application for the next phase of its £45m investment to Portsmouth City Council.

This marks the third stage of the development, aimed at enhancing the all-day experience at the waterfront outlet.

Central Square, a bustling area at the heart of Gunwharf Quays, serves as a gateway for visitors entering from the basement car park and connects key areas such as The Waterfront and The Avenues.

As part of the plan, the former Eden nightclub space will be converted into a family-friendly dining destination, adding to the outlet’s diverse food and beverage options.

In addition to the dining enhancements, aesthetic upgrades are proposed for the surrounding buildings to improve the overall guest experience.

A key feature will be a new large digital screen, designed to broadcast popular events like Wimbledon and Sail Portsmouth. The screen will also offer fresh advertising opportunities for brands.

Yvonne Clay, Centre Director at Gunwharf Quays, said: “This submission marks another key step in our long-term investment in Gunwharf Quays.

“We’re focused on enhancing Gunwharf Quays so it remains an attractive place for people to visit and helps us bring even more of the best brands and best-in-class dining experiences for guests to enjoy.

“Through these plans, alongside our continued sustainability efforts and strong local partnerships, we can continue to create value for Portsmouth’s people, economy and surrounding environment.”

Pending approval, construction will begin in spring 2025. This follows the planning consent for Marlborough Square, granted in June 2023, with works set to start earlier in the year.

More than 500 community members have contributed to shaping Landsec’s Vision Document and Design Guide, which outlines the future development principles for Gunwharf Quays.
