Bournemouth University has struck a new lettings deal with Lakeside North Harbour in Portsmouth, securing 6,200 sq ft of space for its Midwifery and Health Sciences department.

This move establishes a new teaching base for its long-standing midwifery course, bringing higher education closer to the local community.

Students will now have the option to study either at Bournemouth’s main campus or the new Portsmouth location, providing a convenient alternative for those living in Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, and southern Hampshire.

The new space will host 15 academic midwives, offering students hands-on learning alongside practical placements at Queen Alexandra Hospital.

Simon Bateman, Asset Manager at Lakeside, shared his excitement about the partnership: “We’re proud to welcome Bournemouth University’s midwifery department to Lakeside. I’m confident that the campus’ dynamic work environment will be an excellent fit for both students and staff.”

Dr Catherine Angell, Head of the Department for Midwifery and Health Sciences, echoed the sentiment: “Lakeside North Harbour offers an inviting and supportive space for our midwifery students in Portsmouth. The location is perfect, and it helps us continue our mission of nurturing the next generation of midwives.”

This expansion comes as the NHS works to tackle a national shortfall of 2,500 midwives. By offering more accessible routes into the profession, Bournemouth University is helping to address this issue while supporting the local health sector.
