Saddle up for Heartbeat Cycle Sportive 2024

There’s still time to grab your bike and join the Heartbeat Cycle Sportive, with Barratt David Wilson Homes as the event’s headline sponsor.

Taking place next Sunday, September 29 – which coincides with World Heart Day – the event aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and promote Heartbeat’s charity work.

Now in its eighth year, the Heartbeat Cycle Sportive offers cyclists a chance to explore the scenic Test Valley. With both 70- and 40-mile routes, the sportive caters to riders of all abilities.

The ride ends in the picturesque grounds of Embley Independent School, offering a relaxed finish after the challenge.

Cycle sportives, the cycling equivalent of marathons, are designed to test riders’ endurance and all-round biking skills. This year’s event routes will pass through Romsey, Winchester, Stockbridge, and Broughton before splitting. The longer route heads toward Salisbury, while the shorter one loops back via East Tytherley.

Barratt Southampton, the housebuilder’s local division, is sponsoring the event for the first time after selecting Heartbeat as its chosen charity for 2024-25.

Megan Hamlyn, Marketing Manager at Barratt Southampton, will be participating. She said: “This will be my first time riding 40 miles! I know people who have benefited from Heartbeat’s support, and I’m excited to help raise much-needed funds.”

Heartbeat’s Head of Operations, Tina Richardson, expressed her gratitude for Barratt’s involvement. She said: “The Barratt Homes team has been so supportive. They’re even setting up our smoothie bike in their reception to help raise funds.”

Volunteers from Heartbeat will ensure the route is well-marked, with support vehicles and mechanical assistance provided by Giant Southampton.

Hydration will be sponsored by Hildon Water, and a support car will be on standby, courtesy of Hendy Motor Group. Riders will be able to recharge at Embley and Littleton, with refreshments provided at both stops.

The event promises a day of camaraderie, challenge, and community spirit, with all funds going towards supporting Heartbeat’s work in helping those affected by cardiovascular disease.
