‘ADHD is my superpower’ says Lucy as her kitchen renovations business marks its first anniversary

2022 brought about two major changes in Lucy Goffin’s life – she was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and soon after she launched her own business, Kitchen Makeovers Portsmouth.

“Traditional 9 to 5 jobs never quite clicked with me”, she explained. “I was a bit of a job jumper.

“I’ve since learned this is common with people who have ADHD – the rigid structure can be really tricky to manage.

“It felt like taking a big risk, starting my own business.

“But I’ve found a role that allows me to be my own boss while supporting the community, I haven’t looked back.”

This month marks a year since Lucy launched her business, during which time she’s serviced more than 60 homes in the area.

Her aim has always been to provide a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to the typical hefty price tag associated with home renovations.

But also, on a personal level, it’s been about proving to others that ADHD doesn’t necessarily pose a barrier to solo business success – any more than being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

“If nothing else, I want to continue showing other women and people with ADHD out there that the sky is the limit”, said Lucy.

“I’ve used what many consider a disadvantage as my superpower, and it’s vital that we continue to give a platform to diversity.

“Once I received my diagnosis, I was able to learn the best ways to manage the condition.

“There’s a lot of support available – medicine, therapy, or online resources. ADHD isn’t a limitation, but a unique perspective that can drive innovation and success.”

That’s certainly been the case for Lucy, who’s keen to continue delivering low-cost kitchen makeovers to the Hampshire community.

“I’m so proud to have grown my business in the place I call home.

“Now I’ve got a year under my belt, I’m more excited than ever to see how far I can take this venture.”
