Marine navigation app from best-selling nautical author & retired eye surgeon charts new waters

The team behind marine navigation app AngelNav have teamed up with nautical chart publishers Imray to widen their coverage across global waters.

AngelNav is the brainchild of recently retired Yachtmaster Instructor Examiner and best-selling author Tom Cunliffe, alongside ocean sailor and software developer Bill Aylward.

Together the pair have designed the world’s only software to provide traditional plotting on an electronic chart, without the need for constant GPS guidance – giving skippers much more freedom on their route.

“AngelNav’s unique strength is that a user can work up three-point fixes from compass bearings electronically, independently of GPS, exactly as if it were a pencil on a paper chart”, Tom explained.

“Vector diagrams for a course to steer or estimated position are also easily plotted.”

Their proposition is now all the better thanks to the new partnership, which gives them access to Imray’s extensive raster charts – effectively the electronic equivalent of a paper navigation chart.

These images of traditional nautical charts are provided by cartographers from the UKHO, as well as SHOM in France and NOAA in the US.

They’ll give AngelNav access to areas they’ve previously been denied, starting with the Eastern Caribbean.

“This is great news for 2024 ARC participants”, added Tom, referring to the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers next November, “with more areas coming online very soon.”

The free app – from Emsworth marine firm SailTrack – is currently available on Apple devices, while versions for Android, PC and Mac versions are planned for next year.
