The University of Portsmouth has seen major international recognition as its Ravelin Sports Centre received the award for Best Indoor Facility at the 2023 IOC IPC IAKS Architecture Prize.
Representatives headed over to Cologne for the ceremony and were presented the accolade by the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities.
Out of 22 countries, it was the only UK facility to win the prestigious award, and one of only three featured in the Indoor Facilities category.
The Ravelin Sports Centre, which opened last year, previously won the Public Sector Project: Design Stage Award at the BREEAM Awards 2020 and received an A grade for energy efficiency in a recent Display Energy Certificate assessment.
Paul Tilley, Director of Sport and Recreation at the university, said: “It’s brilliant to see our fantastic centre receive this international award, recognising our vision and commitment to sustainability, user experience and high-quality design.
“I’m delighted that many years of hard work from multiple teams across the university are being recognised as internationally excellent.
“The impact Ravelin has on our community is huge and shows the power and importance that sport and physical activity have on our daily lives.”
