Whiteley pupils think outside the (cardboard) box to design eco-friendly homes with David Wilson

Staff from David Wilson Homes joined pupils at Whiteley Primary School recently to help them design and make their own eco-friendly properties using recycled materials.

The school’s very own Green Team of youngsters aged 9 to 11 jumped at the opportunity, working through their lunchtimes on various cardboard creations.

Their builds incorporated all manner of sustainable features, from solar panels and wind turbines to electric charging points, allotments and grass rooves.

Headteacher Lesley Pennington said: “It’s been great to involve the Green Team in a project which gave them a purposeful opportunity to talk about sustainability to adults involved in the building industry.

“All the pupils really enjoyed it.”

Alistair Campbell, Contracts Manager at David Wilson Homes, spoke with the youngsters about their designs and shared some of the sustainable technologies used in their own real-world builds.

“It’s been great to work with Whiteley Primary on this special project”, said Alastair.

“At David Wilson, sustainability is a top priority, and we’re committed to ensuring all our new house types are zero carbon in use from 2030.

“It’s been fantastic to hear from the next generation of homebuyers about what they’d like to have in their homes.

“All the kids have done an amazing job, and every single one of them put some great thought into their designs.”

David Wilson also donated £500 for the school to put towards their own sustainability initiatives, for which Mrs Pennington is ‘extremely grateful’.
