Southampton College’s new facilities will immerse early years & automotive learners in world of work

Southampton College has unveiled two new ‘centres of excellence’ for early years and automotive students.

Designed to bridge the gap between the traditional classroom environment and the industry workplace, the facilities will support T Levels, apprenticeships and Higher Technical Qualifications.

The college is part of the newly established South Hampshire College Group, which opened four other such centres at Eastleigh College this month for bricklaying, health and social care, business and electrical students.

Another digital centre of excellence is due to launch at Southampton before the end of the year, rounding out a £12 million total investment from the college group.

Christian Allen-Kotze, vice principal of Southampton College, said: “We’re delighted to introduce the new facilities at Southampton College.

“These high-spec, industry-aligned spaces are designed to provide our learners with the technical expertise, practical skills and knowledge essential for success, whether they choose to advance into higher education or transition directly into their chosen industries.”

The early years centre of excellence aims to simulate a real nursery environment, featuring a kitchenette, nappy changing facilities and a sensory room, alongside an assortment of toys and games.

The automotive facility is designed with industry trends in mind as the motor industry continues to embrace electric vehicle alternatives.

Students can handle electric batteries from major brands such as Toyota and Nissan, as well as a variety of engines and the latest diagnostic and testing equipment.

Southampton College will be showing off the new centres at an open event on Thursday 10 October from 5pm to 7pm.
