The University of Portsmouth is set to launch three new degree apprenticeship programmes this September after securing £272,000 from the Office of Students (OfS).

The OfS funding will also go towards redesigning learning materials for the existing one-year top-up Manufacturing Engineer course.

Mike PuntMike Punt, director of learning at work and degree apprenticeships at the university, said: “We’re very pleased to be awarded this funding to expand our portfolio.

“Degree apprenticeships are growing in popularity with applicants and employers, so it’s important that we can offer a greater range of options for potential students to meet demand.”

The university currently has more than 800 apprentices – up from just 7 in 2016 – enrolled across 17 different courses.

And they’re not alone – national take-up of higher education apprenticeships grew 10 per cent from the 2021/22 academic year to 42,060 in 2022/23.
