Plans for new living roof bus shelters set Portsmouth abuzz

Portsmouth City Council is making good on its promise to tackle the climate crisis and create space for nature with plans for a network of ‘bee bus stops’.

These new shelters will feature green living rooves adorned with local, low maintenance plants and wildflowers like sedum, which should prove a hit with insect populations.

The council has placed an order for 15 to be installed in sunny spots around the city, with advertisers Clear Channel responsible for their upkeep.

Portsmouth residents can expect to see the first shelters popping up in late September.

Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said: “I am proud that Portsmouth City Council have placed their first order for living roof bus shelters.

“I have heard a lot of feedback from Portsmouth’s residents who really want to see this change across the city, and this is the exciting first step.

“Whilst these bus stops are beneficial for the environment, they also look marvellous, creating beautiful environments in the most unexpected places. I cannot wait to see them in place.”
