Planning permission for the second phase of Landsec’s £45 million investment in Gunwharf Quays has been granted by Portsmouth City Council.

The new phase focuses on Marlborough Square, one of the primary points of arrival at Gunwharf Quays.

The planned improvements include enhancements to the entrance tunnel used by guests arriving via Portsmouth Harbour train station or from the Historic Dockyard.

The approved plans also feature updates to the buildings’ external aesthetics, shopfronts, public realm, and landscaping.

Visitors will benefit from increased seating areas and upgraded, modern guest washroom facilities.

Additionally, a new retail space will be added to the diverse mix of brands at Gunwharf Quays.

The works are scheduled to commence this winter.

Yvonne Clay, Centre Director at Gunwharf Quays, said: “This planning consent marks a significant step in our long-term investment in Gunwharf Quays.

“We’re focused on making improvements to every moment our guests spend with us and ensuring we create the perfect environment for our retailers to continue to flourish.

“Along with our ongoing sustainability actions and strengthened local partnerships, this planning consent enables us to unlock even more value for Portsmouth.”

More than 500 members of the local community contributed to refining Landsec’s Vision Document and Design Guide for Gunwharf Quays, which outlines design principles for future planning applications.

Current works on The Avenues have commenced and will progress over the next six months.

It is anticipated that proposals for future phases of the £45 million investment project will be shared later this year.
