Trial success for biotech veteran Martyn whose ozone-based device delivers pure, clean ice cubes

After more than 50 years in the industry, Hampshire man Martyn Jutsum is looking to revolutionise the world of catering with his new technology, HygienICETM.

The device uses an ozone generator to sanitise commercial ice making machines and keep out harmful airborne and waterborne pathogens, producing pure, clean ice cubes.

Martyn showing the inside of HygienICEIt’s now successfully completed scientific trials at the five-star Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales, organised in partnership with Ozone Industries of Andover and Cardiff Metropolitan University.

“Having been in the industry since 1972, I can safely say that this new ozone technology is amongst the most innovative and effective products in food biosecurity”, said Martyn, CEO of Hygienico.

“HygienICETM units are not only cost-effective, but also provide continuous 24/7 cleaning of both the water reservoir and interior surfaces, eliminating biofilms and the need for labour-intensive maintenance regimes.”

The Celtic Manor Resort provided the ‘ideal venue’ for the trial, he added, with plenty of ice machines throughout the premises for testing.

Martyn’s device would be a welcome addition to the market for Simon White, Maintenance Manager of the Celtic Collection.

“We know first-hand the constant demand for pure clean ice in hospitality, and the ongoing, time-consuming ice machine maintenance chores”, said Simon.

“So HygienICETM seems to us a real game-changer.

“We’ve enjoyed testing it, and I’m confident that it will soon become a standard throughout the industry as its benefits are self-evident.”

The device has been in development for the past five years, with Martyn working alongside Mike Prince of Ozone Industries and James Blaxland of Zero2Five Food Industry Centre.

Their technology makes use of a novel low-dose oxidation method which saves both time and money on existing solutions.

It’s also compact and easy to install, requiring just 14 Watts of constant power.

Individual HygienICETM devices are already available to buy or lease from Shine Food Machinery in Newport, who also offer custom installation, staff training and annual maintenance.
