Life’s a beach in Southampton as the team behind the city’s Xmas market dig in for the summer

The company that delivers the popular Southampton Christmas market has returned for the summer season with a new concept.

S&D Leisure, a family-run attraction and events company from Manchester, is running a summer beach club in the Above Bar Street pedestrian zone of the city centre.

The new attraction features a play zone, beach bar, stalls, ice cream and food outlets – not to mention more than 25 tonnes of sand.

Families have been enjoying the seaside theme, with free games for children and live music in the bar every evening and weekend.

Chris Thompson from S&D Leisure said: “We’re delighted to fund and deliver something for both residents and visitors to enjoy during the school holidays.

“We’re receiving great feedback, especially about the beach and entertainment, which has included music, salsa dancing and Punch and Judy shows.

“We also believe it’s benefitted local shops and traders too.

“Lots of European cities run summer events, and it’s good to have this in the heart of Southampton, especially now that the retail landscape is changing.”

S&D Leisure is looking to return to Southampton this winter with plans for an even bigger Christmas event.

Chris added: “We’re delighted to work in partnership with Southampton City Council to bring events and attractions into the city.

“Each year we aim to bring something new and different to appeal to all ages.”

The Summer Beach Club Southampton continues until 1 September 2024.
