School pupils from over 40 schools across southern Hampshire are gathering for the i-Construct event at Fareham College’s Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) this Thursday and Friday.
The aim is to inspire pupils from years 7 to 11 to pursue careers in construction.
They’ll be introduced to more than 200 job roles, as well as a range of educational pathways – including further and higher education, apprenticeships and T levels.
The event, supported by the Solent and Hampshire Careers Hubs, also features a Dragons Den-style construction challenge, which last year saw them tasked with developing a new Nightingale Hospital after a large sinkhole appeared next to an existing hospital.
The second day, Friday, will be opened by Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage.
Nicki Craven, head of careers and futures at King’s Academy Bay House school in Gosport, said: “i-Construct is such a wonderful opportunity for young people – not only to meet representatives from across the industry, but to consider real-life scenarios while taking part in hands-on activities.
“The event raises awareness of the skills shortages alongside the diverse range of careers in construction and the built environment.
“Students from King’s Academy Bay House have attended for the past three years and really enjoy being able to use the excavators, VR headsets and simulators.
“We’re so lucky to have modern facilities like CETC and CEMAST on our doorstep.”
Jason Woodward, chair of Hampshire Construction Training Association, added: “It’s important to give the next generation a real feel and excitement about this rewarding industry.
“It’s very much a hands-on event and showcases the variety of openings available to everyone from all abilities with our local companies.”
