A Hampshire-based charity is making waves in the tech world by using cutting-edge satellite technology to enhance productivity at its remote locations.

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (HIWWT), headquartered in Curdridge near Botley, has partnered with local IT services firm Aura Technology to improve internet connectivity across its vast conservation areas.

Over the past five years, Aura has supported HIWWT through a digital transformation, with enhanced internet access being a key part of this journey.

Tim Walker, Managing Director at Aura, explained how satellite technology became the solution to their connectivity problems. He said: “HIWWT spoke with our Technical Director Pete Hughes about their needs, and we identified that Starlink, developed by SpaceX, was the ideal solution.”

Starlink uses Low Earth Orbit satellites to provide broadband internet in rural and remote areas.

Before switching, HIWWT’s rural sites had struggled with download speeds as low as 1 to 5Mbps, severely impacting day-to-day operations. Now, thanks to Starlink, the charity enjoys speeds of up to 100Mbps, making a significant difference in efficiency and communication.

Tara Puttock, Facility Manager at HIWWT, noted the impact: “Starlink has removed the frustrations of poor internet connectivity and lengthy downtimes, allowing our teams to work as efficiently as if they were in built-up areas.

“We know we can rely on Aura to offer the best solutions, ensuring excellent value for money.”

This upgrade marks another milestone in HIWWT’s ongoing efforts to use technology to protect wildlife and enhance their conservation work.
