Southampton’s Griffon Hoverwork have unveiled a new hovercraft designed to assist armies operating in remote and hostile environments.

Griffon Hoverwork logoThe Wyvern class delivers a rapid, amphibious transport solution for the world’s military forces looking to deploy resources in response to conflict scenarios, natural disasters or humanitarian crises.

Mark Downer, Engineering Director at Griffon Hoverwork, made the announcement to guests at the Defence and Security Equipment International event in London, including naval personnel, government officials and military strategists.

He said: “Griffon is the world leader in hovercraft design and innovation, with six decades of experience in naval architecture and design.

“Our objective was to create an LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) which delivers outstanding performance whilst being easy to maintain for optimum operational readiness.”

Boasting a top speed of 50 knots, a payload of more than 52 tonnes and dimensions to ensure interoperability with legacy amphibious ships, the Wyvern has been designed to meet common naval requirements.

It will also better withstand prolonged exposure to extreme conditions where other, older models have been subject to erosion.
