Unanimous approval has been granted by Portsmouth city councillors for a scheme to build 2,300 new homes in an area north of the city centre.

The development will span Hope Street, Charlotte Street, and Commercial Road, with a public park and commercial space also planned.

Lee HuntCllr Lee Hunt, Cabinet Member for Resources, told colleagues: “This is going to be a UK first.

“The proposal here should evolve into one of the most sustainable districts in the UK and intends to be inclusive, biodiverse and eco-friendly for its community and visitors.

“It’s the council’s aspiration for sustainable communities, better connectivity and greener travel.”

The project will be delivered in two phases, starting with the construction of two residential blocks for 550 homes – mostly private ownership – and a 7,000 sq m public park.
