Future of marine research takes centre stage at Southampton’s MATS event

The future of the UK’s marine research infrastructure and solo global ocean challenges are set to dominate this year’s tenth Marine Autonomy and Technology Showcase (MATS), as announced by event organiser, the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

Taking place from 5-7 November at NOC’s dockside facilities in Southampton, the event promises a mix of keynotes, technical sessions, and networking opportunities. The NOC-operated research vessel, RRS James Cook, will be alongside during the event.

Keynote speakers include NOC CEO Dr John Siddorn, who will share his vision for the organisation after taking over leadership earlier this year.

Joining him is Dr Katherine Hill, Lead Scientist for the Future Marine Research Infrastructure (FMRI) programme at NERC. Dr Hill will discuss the work done so far exploring marine science aspirations for 2040, aimed at guiding future investments in the UK’s marine research infrastructure.

Dr Hill said: “I’m looking forward to sharing our insights so far as part of our consultation on shaping future marine infrastructure and opportunities for strengthened partnerships with industry.

“FMRI is focused on maximising information value for investment in marine research infrastructure by bringing observations and digital tools together in innovative ways.”

The event will also feature Conrad Humphreys, an adventurer and British yachtsman. Humphreys, known for being the youngest participant in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race (now Volvo Ocean Race), will provide insights from his experience of solo sailing, including the Vendée Globe, to inspire the marine autonomy community.

In addition to the keynotes, MATS will host a series of technical sessions covering essential themes such as the blue economy, marine autonomy, robotics, artificial intelligence, and next-generation autonomous platforms. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet a wide range of companies and organisations in the exhibition area.

The programme will also feature a drinks reception, sponsored by the NOC Innovation Centre, on Tuesday, 5 November, and an evening social event, sponsored by Exail, on Wednesday, 6 November.
