Ahead of today’s International Women’s Day, a manager at Barratt Homes’ Southampton division has been inspiring the next generation of women preparing for their future careers.

Barratt Homes logoMegan Hamlyn, marketing manager at Barratt’s Hedge End HQ, has been working in the male-dominated property sector since 2017, and was eager to share her story at Saints Foundation’s IWD event for 11- to 16-year-old girls in Hampshire.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is to ‘inspire inclusion’, so Saints Foundation looked to highlight potential routes into aspirational careers with girls from the charity’s own Changemakers scheme.

Megan spoke at the event alongside Gemma Osgood from law firm Hugh James, as well as Olivia Ashcroft, partnerships executive at Saints Foundation.

Each spoke about their career journeys so far and fielded questions, with Megan’s talk focusing on her experiences overcoming barriers in the construction industry and the steps her team has taken to encourage more women into the sector.

“At Barratt, we’re keen on inspiring young people from the region to join the building industry, and events like this are the perfect opportunity”, she said.

“It’s been great to come along and share my thoughts today, and I hope it will help these girls feel confident in pursuing their choice of career in the future.”

Saints Foundation aims to provide life-changing opportunities to help the city and its communities thrive.

One way it does that is through the Changemakers scheme – an initiative working to empower, inspire and develop leadership potential in young women as they plan for the future.

Olivia added: “This was a fantastic morning that showed our young women that, through hard work and determination, they can be anything they want to be.

“I’m really proud to be a part of this event along with Megan and Gemma. Thanks go to them both for agreeing to come along and for sharing their inspirational stories.”
