A croc with a sock, plastic bottles, earbud sticks, and food packaging were just a few of the items collected during a recent beach clean-up on Hayling Island.
Emsworth-based MindWorks Marketing teamed up with the local environmental charity, the Final Straw Foundation (FSF), for the clean-up along the Billy Trail and foreshore.
The team of 14 employees from MindWorks Marketing spent their annual volunteer day contributing to the clean-up effort.
The activity was part of their ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ initiative, which encourages staff to take a break from office work and enjoy the outdoors while making a positive impact on the community.
In addition to larger plastics that had blown into the undergrowth, the team discovered hundreds of tiny plastic ‘nurdles’—small plastic pellets used in the manufacturing of large-scale plastics.
These nurdles are harmful to wildlife and the environment, highlighting the importance of such clean-up efforts.
Michelle Leggatt, Managing Director of MindWorks Marketing, led the team during the clean-up. Reflecting on the day, Michelle said: “As part of our waterside community, I’m really proud that our team has given something important back to help protect our area’s shoreline.
“It was great to be with others who care deeply about protecting our environment and the event was such a rewarding and fun experience. The satisfaction we felt in making a difference to our beautiful coast means we will definitely be back to do more beach cleans in the very near future.”
The rubbish collected during the event will be reported to the Marine Conservation Society, which is conducting a study to monitor the waste found along this stretch of Hayling Island’s foreshore.
