InstaVolt breaks ground near Winchester on first of several planned EV charging ‘super hubs’

Work has begun on what is soon to be the UK’s largest rapid-only EV charging hub, just north of Winchester.

Located at Three Maids Hill near the A34, InstaVolt’s new ‘super hub’ will include both drive-through bays for large and towing vehicles and accessible bays.

There’ll also be a restaurant and play area, plus large ground- and roof-mounted solar arrays and battery energy storage systems to keep the site powered.

Delvin Lane, CEO of Basingstoke-based InstaVolt, said: “There are now more than 1,100,000 fully electric cars on UK roads, and Three Maids is the first of our new generation of super hubs.

“It represents a major landmark for us and will be game changing for EV drivers.

“Linking the South with the Midlands and beyond, the site will be a gateway to the Jurassic Coast and the South West.

“EV drivers will be able to head off south confident in the knowledge that they’ll be able to stop off, have the convenience of contactless payment, and get a fast and reliable charge.”

Plans for the Three Maids hub were approved by Winchester City Council late last year and earned the full backing of Cllr Kelsie Learney, cabinet member for climate emergency.

“Switching to electric vehicles is a key part of our strategy for decarbonising going forward”, said Cllr Learney.

“Facilities like this play an important part in enabling that.”

Delvin added: “Delivering super hubs like Three Maids is essential to improving the charging infrastructure across the country, bringing continued confidence not only to the sector as a whole, but crucially to those motorists who are making the switch to a more sustainable and greener future by choosing to drive an EV.”

Work on the site is due for completion by Spring 2025.
