Grade II listed Ryde department store destined for transformation into events and exhibitions hub

Isle of Wight Council has given the green light for plans to transform the former Elizabeth Pack Department Store into a cultural centre for events and exhibitions.

Turner.Works has big plans for the central Ryde building, including a café, workspaces and retail outlets for local creatives, and performance spaces for community arts groups.

Work will soon be underway to repair the frontage and install new signage, windows and contemporary decoration.

There’ll also be a terrace and an enhanced rear entrance to encourage users of the car park to pass through the building into Ryde town centre.

The town’s own carnival arts group Shademakers have been big advocates for the project, who together with Turner.Works managed to secure backing from the Arts Council Capital Fund.

Project Director Suzi Winstanley of Turner.Works said: “These plans will revitalise a significant heritage building and reimagine it as a place for the community which puts art, culture and creativity at the heart of Ryde’s high street.

“Like many heritage buildings, this department store has had many uses in its lifetime, but it’s always been a space for making, displaying, selling, hosting and performing.

“So we’re thrilled that our designs will ensure it retains this use for future generations, whilst having a positive and constantly evolving impact on the town centre.”

Construction is expected to begin at the end of this year, with an aim to finish by the end of 2024.

Turner.Works will be working alongside local architects Modh Design, as well as Tari Willis, Salvis Group, 24 Acoustics, NT Surveying, Daniel Stimson Surveying, and BWC Fire.

The firm is also collaborating with Isle of Wight Council on a feasibility study for a new Cultural Centre in Newport.
