Employment consultants work with Boeing to help people back into STEM jobs after a career break

STEM Returners in Fareham have teamed up with Boeing on an initiative to support individuals reintegrate into the workforce after some time away.

Their new ‘Return Flight’ programme is aimed at bolstering sectors like engineering, operations and quality, with a focus on equipping ‘returners’ with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their new or reprised roles.

Natalie Desty, Director of STEM Returners, said: “There’s a known shortage of skills across STEM industries in the UK.

“To see a company like Boeing launch the Return Flight programme here and help this pool of skilled, dedicated and talented professionals return to work is very positive.

“Through partnerships like this, we will we make vital changes in STEM recruitment practices to help those who are finding it challenging to return to the sector and improve diversity and inclusion.”

Each participant on the programme is matched with a dedicated professional coach, mentor and buddy, who can offer support throughout their return to the workplace.

This is alongside tailored onboarding, foundational upskilling and personal coaching sessions, all aimed at developing professional and leadership skills.

The launch of Return Flight follows research from STEM Returners which revealed that 66 per cent of STEM professionals on a career break find it difficult or very difficult to return to work, with 46 per cent feeling biased against due to a lack of recent experience.

STEM Returners are looking to take on candidates who have taken a minimum continuous or combined career break of 18–24 months.

Upon completing the 12-week programme, these participants will then have the chance to move into full-time employment.
