Southampton was recently the setting for The Big Sustainability Awards.

Now in their fifth year, the awards, which were backed by housebuilder Barratt Homes, celebrate the achievements of organisations and individuals helping the country’s journey to net zero.

Organised by The Southern Sustainability Partnership and hosted at the Ageas Bowl, the evening featured a three-course meal as a panel of experts chose winners in ten different categories.

The evening also featured a raffle with big prizes including top skin care, a round of golf for two, and signed England shirt donated by Barratt Homes. There was also entertainment and dancing until midnight.

It was hosted by well-known author, broadcaster and television presenter Fred Dinenage MBE, who recalled many anecdotes from his long TV career including the time he met Dame Julie Andrews.

Barratt Homes, which is building sustainable properties across the region, and is committed to protecting the environment, was not only Ambassador for the event, but also sponsored the award for Energy Management Project of the Year.

James Dunne, Barratt Homes Managing Director, Southampton Division, said: “It’s critical that more organisations take steps to become more sustainable, and these awards are highlighting the big players in that regard. At Barratt Homes sustainability is a top priority and it’s been fantastic to meet those other businesses which are making it theirs.

“It’s been a pleasure to show our support for this important event.”

Other awards were for Net Zero Journey of the Year; Start-Up of the Year; Communicating your Sustainability Project; Waste Management Project of the Year; SME: Your Sustainability Journey; ISO 14001 Business of the Year; Sustainable Transport Project of the Year; and Sustainable product or service of the Year.

Lynda Daniels from The Southern Sustainability Partnership, organisers of the Big Sustainability Awards, said: “This has been a really successful evening, and it has been a delight to be able to acknowledge the great sustainability efforts from businesses and individuals across the country. We were delighted to have Barratt Developments as Ambassador. Our ethos for both now and the future is so well aligned, it made sense to join forces.”

Barratt Homes has maintained its position as the ‘Leading National Sustainable Housebuilder’ in the influential NextGeneration sustainability awards, receiving the “Gold Award” for the seventh consecutive year, as well as the “Crystal Award”, for Transparency, for a third year. It was also recently the top housebuilder, and scored an A rating, in the leading global sustainability benchmark CDP.
